Area around Carlton's Hotel - is it safe?

I am trying to make a group booking and one of the hotel options we have been offered is the Carlton%26#39;s Hotel, Boulevard de Rochechouart near Pigalle. This seems to be ideal for its relative closeness to the Gare du Nord (or is it further away than we%26#39;ve been told) as well as Montmartre, but I have been warned that it is near to the Red Light district. How close is it? Will we have to walk through to reach the nearest Metro station, will the female members of our group feel safe here?

The distance is probably about 1 km to the Gare du Nord; metro stations Pigalle and Anvers are close (200 m) to the hotel. The blvd. Rochechouart is not very %26#39;chic%26#39;, but it%26#39;s a long boulevard and some parts are better than others.

Use the french version of the yellow pages (www.pagesjaunes.fr) to see pictures of any building in Paris, this may reassure you a bit - the hotel doesn%26#39;t look bad at all!

You can also check the site of the Parisian public transport (www.ratp.fr) to view maps, plan trips, etc.

Whether or not someone will feel safe there is difficult to say - but I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much.

I%26#39;m a wooman and I stay to Hotel Migny (pigalle station) it was very nice and not dangerous!

I recommand this area and this hotel was very nice!

What are your other hotel choices and do you need to stay near Gare du Nord? I%26#39;ll be the lone dissenter here to say that while locals say the 10th is not bad, that is from their point of view. The area is not %26#39;charming%26#39; and the Barbes Rochechouart metro station is one of the most notorious. As you are all females, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend staying there. Of course, you can stay in this area and not have any problems, but if your group can stay more in the center it would be better in my opinion. It%26#39;s your decision in the end after all.

We have been offered other hotels, but they seem to be further out of Paris (such as the Camponile XVII at Porte de Clichy). Since we are considering travelling by Eurostar I was hoping that we%26#39;d be able to find a hotel near to the Gare du Nord but the agents I%26#39;m using haven%26#39;t been able to find a hotel with enough twin-bedded rooms for us close by.

It is difficult when booking for other people - personally I would take a chance and just be sensible about taking precautions when travelling in a city but I%26#39;m reluctant to trust to other people%26#39;s common sense!

Thanks for all the help so far, I love Tripadvisor!

Given a choice between Pigalle and Porte de Clichy, there%26#39;s no contest - you should go for Pigalle. Porte de Clichy is way out on the ring-road and of little interest.

As other members have indicated, you shouldn%26#39;t have any problems.

I just want to add that I have now looked on the French Yellow Pages site (www.pagesjaune.fr)- it is fantastic - it is easy to use, and gives photographs of the building and the street it is in, as well as comprehensive transport options - it is in English and it%26#39;s free too!

Thanks for the tip JanToo!

Even though I think that you%26#39;ll be absolutely safe in this area of Paris, I still don%26#39;t get the urge to be near gare du Nord. Paris is quite compact and staying in a quainter neighbourhood, say, Saint Germain or the Marais would only mean 15 more minutes on the métro... twice from and to gare du Nord, but much fewer minutes, not to say hours on the métro to and from Paris%26#39;s main attractions that are, let%26#39;s face it, not close to Pigalle. Plus, the two métro lines at hand there (2 and 12) are not very convenient IMHO.

I agree with Bob.
