My wife and I will be in Paris from the morning of December 31st and leaving the night of January 1st. Any recommendations on what we should expect. Will everything be closed on January 1st? What about restaurants, shops, cafes. Is there a big New Year eve celebration in Paris? Any recommendations are appreciated.
My wife has dreamed about being in Paris for New Years and I am planning to surprise her this year. We%26#39;ll be traveling in Switzerland at that time and we%26#39;ll make this 2 day %26quot;detour%26quot;.
Are there any shows or places we can go for the New Year celebration. The only thing I found on the NET is Moulin Rouge but that%26#39;s just ridiculously expensive ($1400 for the two of us)

Everything will be really expensive for new year, hotels have special rates, restaurants special menus and the shows (Moulin rouge, Lido etc) will make special events. The reason why it is so expensive is because they offer you the full program from roughly 7pm to 4am. So aperitif, dinner, show, drinks, music and dancing til sundawn.
The best thing to do is probably to look for a nice hotel, make a reservation in a regular restaurant and then stay around the EIffel Tower by midnight. The Champs elysée are really crowded for new years eve and later in the night not the best place to hang around.

I would definitely stay off of the Champs Elysees. It is horribly crowded and there are many people pickpocketed. I know of one lady who had her digital camera taken out of her hands as she was there followed by her purse a few minutes later. Find a restaurant now near your hotel-use Travel Advisor to find them-and make a reservation now. It will be almost impossible to do so if you wait too long.

I was cautioned not only by my hotel but also by Parisian local acquaintances that the Champs Elysees is not the place to go on NYE. The only people who go there are the tourists and hooligans looking to make lots of trouble. There is no grand celebration on the Champs Elysees only mahem. Also there will be a lack of transportation so plan well. There was a fireworks display last NYE at Pl. de la Concorde and it could be seen at Notre Dame%26#39;s Pl. du Parvis. There were many tourists there as well and some were toasting each other with their bottles of champagne. Others, maybe some locals, were setting off fireworks and firecrackers. It was crowded and chaotic but there was no mayhem that I noticed. But do hang onto your belongings.
