students looking for chep but safe place to stay

Hi!

My 2 girlfriends and I are going to be in Paris from the 29 of December to the 2nd of January. We would love to stay in hostels to meet other college-age travellers like ourselves, but I have heard horror stories about European hostels and I%26#39;m starting to get discouraged. Can anybody recomend the best area to stay in Paris? All of the hostels seem to be in Monmartre, but I%26#39;ve heard that the district is seedy. Is Monmartre really that unsafe, and it is hard to get to the big tourist destinations? We would like to stay in a place that is clean and safe, but also fun and close to everything. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

Katie
