Which apartment/hotel would you choose?

Traveling with my husband and a four-year old in early May 2006. We would like to be close to the metro and Jardins du Luxembourg in a nice property. Options so far are:

1. VRBO apartment for 1,500 euros for ten nights. http://www.vrbo.com/69298 I think the address is Avenue de l%26#39;Observatoire.

2. Superior Room at the Hôtel des Jardins du Luxembourg for 150 euros per night (1,500 for 10 nights plus tax)

3. Rentalfrance apartment Rue Xavier Privas www.rentalfrance.com/index.php… for about 1,400 euros.

Anyone familiar with locations to help with our selection?

Thanks!

I have heard nothing but good about the guy, Pascal, who does Rentalfrance. When last in Paris renting a flat, we didn%26#39;t rent from him and then wished we HAD since we had a lot of problems with our flat that we did rent. Have spoken with lots of people that have rented his flats and they really liked him. Having said that, expect his flat to be really small, if I%26#39;m judging from his photos. That is common for Parisian flats that are reasonably priced in good areas. The vrbo one looks very nice and well maintained. Check to make sure you are near a metro stop that you can walk to easily and I think you would be happy there also. Can%26#39;t comment on the hotel, but we always enjoy flats so that we can stretch out a little more and make our own breakfast, etc. The kids love shopping each night on the way home for the next morning%26#39;s breakfast fixings.

Having said that....flats can sometimes be noisy, especially since Parisians tend to stay up until midnight even on weekdays, so you may hear the flat above moving around until well after 11 p.m. We once had a flat where the apartment next door had a daycare so we heard all the toddlers screaming and crying for their parents as they were dropped off in the morning. It got us up and out early in the morning! We told our kids it was a good way of seeing how people in large cities REALLY live! ;)

People in big cities rarely live next door to day cares with screaming kids. They rent those aparts. out to visitors from abroad.

Meanwhile, we enjoy the quiet of our double paned well insulated flats.

We swapped our Paris flat for a house in SF this summer. I could not stand the noise of traffic at all hours of the day/night in that house and in the suburban homes that we visited. Couldn%26#39;t wait to get back to the calm of our Paris home!

I do not think I would chose the #3 apartment. It looks very small! The bed up in a loft might be a problem with a 4 year old.

I do not like climbing up ladders to sleep but that is just me.

# 3 also does not mention having an elevator either. Which would mean packing your child and stroller and food up how many stairs? ( at least one flight!)

#1 looks good. Seems like a good location (has elevator) looks roomier, has smaller kitchen for making your child familar foods (but you don%26#39;t want to cook all your meals) .

The #2 hotel selection also is in good location. I do not know what floor you reqest or if it has elevator.

Between the two it should be your preference.

To phread: %26quot;Meanwhile, we enjoy the quiet of our double paned well insulated flats.%26quot;

Not all rentals or hotels in Paris have %26quot;double paned windows or well insulated walls%26quot;! I have been in many in Paris and the traffic always wakes one up if you are not in an inner courtyard!

One always needs to ask!

I just found out that #1 is located near Avenue de l%26#39;observatoire in th heart of Montparnasse. What is this area like? I guess it%26#39;s not the 6e as I had imagined, but the 14e. Does that matter?

Be careful about Jardins de Lux room. I LOVE that hotel, believe me, but aside from a couple of rooms on top floors, their rooms can be VERY small. When I called 4 years ago to ask for a room for husband, then 7 month old son and me, their superior room couldn%26#39;t have fit the three of us. I ended staying at the Clos de Medicis in a King sized room...with a portabed.

Anyway, just check to be sure, if hotel is your route! I posted elsewhere about the VRBO you%26#39;re looking at -- VERY SMALL!! The one we chose is small (most are), but for us, it had everything we needed (wash/dryer, well known manager, DVD, low floor, quietish street, near Lux, shower/bath as we liked it...) Take a look (VRBO: 18044)
