Are the caves open to tourists in February?

Is it worth visiting in February? Are 3 days enough to get there %26amp; back from Paris (via rail)?

The Dordogne is not a great area to visit in February. Many tourist sites, hotels and restaurants are closed from December - Easter. THe weather can be iffy - sometimes beautiful, but occasionally in winter our friends who live outside Sarlat have told us the roads can be icy.

What about early April? Easter is late this year (April 16). We are planning on visiting sometime between April 5 and April 11.

I would think early April would be fine. Check with the tourist offices. Some of the sights like the Gouffre de Padirac or Les Eyzies have their own websites that list when they are open.

To answer Zipster16, by rail Brive or Souillac are 5 hours From Paris. If you take to TGV to Bordeaux, there are only a few trains a day going west to the towns of the Dordogne - Sarlat is about 2 hours, so the ride is the same either way.

If you only have 3 days total, including travel time, I%26#39;d go somewhere closer to Paris. The Loire Valley (Tours) is only one hour by train. There are great castles all around (Amboise, Chenonceaux, Chambord, etc...), but I would rent a car while there to be sure to get to everything I wanted to see. The WWII sights of Normandy are only an hour or so away too.

If you have three days to spend in the Dordogne not including travel time, just check to see what is open ahead of time.

Do not show up with no reservations, as many hotels and B%26amp;B%26#39;s are not open in February. Once you%26#39;re there, you will need a rental car, as there is not good public transportation between towns. If you just want to see Sarlat, take the train from Paris to Souillac, then there is a bus from the train station to Sarlat. If you%26#39;re there on a Saturday or Wednesday morning there%26#39;s a good market in the old section of town.
