Local Help... Where to buy furniture??

My husband and I are the proud new owners of an apartment in Paris.. but we don%26#39;t have a single piece of furniture. We have looked all over but haven%26#39;t found much in our price range that we like.

I am looking for suggestions (other than Habitat, Conforama or Ikea) with reasonable prices (around 1000€ for a sofa, 1000€ for a dining set etc).

We found some stuff that is %26quot;okay%26quot; but I want to make sure we aren%26#39;t missing some really great shops somewhere.

We need to have all the big items delivered as the apartment is on the 4th floor and the furniture will probably have to come through the window..

Thanks!

Buy the 2006 copy of Paris pas cher.

Also check out Fusac as it lists furniture for sale (people moving back to States etc.)

You are better of also looking outside Paris. We had friends in Herblay (but any suburb will do) and they took us to some good stores.

Congratulations, GV. We just did the same thing about 18 months ago. It has been a spledid adventure. I second the advice to get your hands on a copy of %26quot;Paris Pas Cher%26quot;, but be sure to get the 2006 edition that has just come out so that the accompanying discount card will be good for the coming year.

Also, be sure to consider the depot-ventes. With a little searching, you can find some superb pieces of furniture at reasonable prices. This is particularly true if you like Art Deco pieces. I%26#39;d recommend the two depot-ventes on rue d%26#39;Alesia, about two blocks from M Alesia (sorry, but I can%26#39;t remember the addresses). There%26#39;s also the Depot-Vente de Paris in the 12th. Any of these places will deliver for an added fee.

There are also a lot of places that you can get Indonesian hardwood furniture and leather seating furniture that looks good, but doesn%26#39;t cost a fortune. Sorry about not knowing any addresses or even specific names, but there is Coup de Foudre on rue des Batignolles (17th), (name?) on rue Ste-Croix de la Bretonnerie just off rue des Archives, and (name?) on rue d%26#39;Alesia.

La Maison du Convertible has an enormous selection of canapes, and the ones one sale can be reasonably inexpensive (although the better ones are very expensive).

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will see if we can find some of the places. We are really limited with the delivery situation buying through the Fusac or other places that do not deliver.

Where can I buy a copy of Paris pas cher??

GV: among other places you could find %26quot;Paris Pas Cher 2006%26quot; at the FNAC stores .... available throughout Paris....

I second Paris pas Cher and La Maison du Convertible. There is one MdC near where you live on avenue de la République, métro Parmentier. Paris pas Cher can be bought in any bookstore (published by Le Seuil). If you like exotic/colonial furniture, it%26#39;s the latest craze, there is a chain of stores called La Maison coloniale.

You would be surprised to see how skilled French movers are to get your furniture through a staircase! Basically, if you live in an haussmanien building (even low key, such as mine), it%26#39;ll go through. My staircase is 1.2 m wide and double bed, 2 m sofa, everything went up! Otherwise, you%26#39;ll have to rent those outdoor hoists, it%26#39;s about 150 euros an hour I think.

THere are cleverly placed adds for removal services in FUSAC too such as %26#39;a man, a van and two strong hands%26#39; - it%26#39;s still worth having a look. Sadly Paris furniture shpooing is limited - friends, French and foreign, all seem to go the %26quot;Confo%26quot; / Ikea route as have we aside from a futon and put up yourselves bookcases from a local shop.
