Where to go from Nice as a base?

I am spending 4 days in nice and would like to explore the environs including Provence. Suggestions? I will have a car.

There are lots of things and sites to see. For instance:

Medieval villages like Eze-Village and La Turbie on your way to Monaco on the Grande Corniche and on your way back to Nice stop at the Villa Ephrussi-Rotschild on the Basse Corniche, close to St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. That could take one day.

Westbound St-Paul-de-Vence and Vence are easy to reach, close to each othe and quite close from Cannes (you can stop by Cannes and have a walk on the Croisette)

Keep the other 2 days for Nice and forget about the car. You have the Old Town, the market in the Cours Saleya, museums like the MAMAC (Modern Art), Matisse, Chagall and Musée des Beaux-Arts. You should relax on the Promenade des Anglais, maybe waltk to the top of the Old Castle Hill to get a full view of the bay and Nice.

On Friday AM you can take the train to Vintimille (Ventimiglia in Italy) for the market. A must-see once in your life. Nice Italian city if you walk around. I prefer the other Italian market on saturday AM in Sanremo (15 min train from Vintimille) and eat on the large place at Il Profumo del Misto (best spahetti carbonara I ever had).

And I know others like Sherif and Londonbob will tell you to go elsewhere since there are lots of things for only 4 days.

yymca6, I will be there for just one day, next Saturday, prior to my cruiseship%26#39;s departure from the port in Monaco that evening. What do you suggest for me? Arriving Nice airport at about 9:30 AM, cruiseship leaves at about 6 PM. Thanks so much!!!

I%26#39;ve just come back from 5 days in nice. We didn%26#39;t have a car, but was able to easily get around by bus. It really depends what you%26#39;re into. We spent it as follows:

- monaco

- eze (pretty little village perched on a hill with great views -half day would be enough. It%26#39;s on the way to monaco)

- st paul de vence (my personal favourite - a charming village abounding in artist galleries)

- antibes (coastal town would probably skip this town if I were to do it over)

If you get to the airport at 9:30, that means you will be out with your bags around 10:30. What will you do with your bags before going to the boat? An answer to that question will help me in helping you.

If you have to carry your bags with you I would suggest you first get your bags on the boat in Monaco then get back to Monaco to visit. This way you would be sure to get your stuff on time on the boat.

Villefranche sur Mer - just past Nice toward Monaco. Quaint small town, picturesque harbor, nice sand-like beach.

St Paul de Vence is lovely and artsy but VERY touristy!!! Seems that%26#39;s what it exists for... like Carmel, California there are many art galleries - some have great art and some cheap yucky stuff.

BUT it is lovely and historic... and if you have a car and are interested in modern art %26amp; architecture, do NOT miss the Foundation Maeght. It is just outside St Paul (would be a long walk but not terrible, just very uphill).
