Paris flight with focus on trip to Italy

OK so call me a fool but I bought tickets to Paris and thought that would be a fine place to build a trip around. As its turning out most of my 2 week trip will be in Rome, Florence, Venice. I%26#39;ve gone over the idea of flying from Paris to Rome renting a car and heading North for 9 days then driving back straight through OR I could get a rail pass head from Paris to Munich (2days) then to Venice (2 days) Florence (3days) Rome (2 days) then back to Paris via train. Both of these ideas are beginning to sound like way to much. Anyone out there with ideas? I would like to have a car in Italy to drive the countryside but maybe its just not financially wise? Thanks to everyone contributing to this forum.

If your plane tickets are re-fundable or can be exchanged with a modest penality, I would start over.

With you current plans, the $%26#39;s you would spend on train travel to and from Paris may off set the change.

I agree that if you can modify your plane tickets it would be better. We traveled from Paris to Venice by train (12 hr ride in an overnight compartment instead of sleeping in a hotel but it cost us each about $200 US dollars one-way for a double). We then took another train from Venice to visit Rome (this ticket was not as expensive and only 4.5 hrs). We flew into one city and out the last one (we passed Florence on the train and you could make that stop). That saved us time from having to return to Paris and we got a decent air fare last spring 2005 considering that we flew to and from different cities.
