We are travelling from Nice to Pisa (or rather Lucca) in December and I am wondering the best way for us to travel. I have tried to find out about flights but for a family of 4 (we have 2 boys 3 and 5) the cheapest fare was just under 1000 euros. My next option is train to Milan one day and then train to Lucca the following day. Just not sure about how to find the best way to travel...any advice would be great.

I do not know specifics but look into Nice to Florence. You
do not say how long you want to stay in either Pisa or Lucca but travel from Florence to Pisa does not appear that far.
Other option is to take a train to Florence and rent a car
and drive to Lucca.
Look into train travel instead. You may be able to travel much cheaper than 1000 euros.

Call Rail Europe and get a quote. They are very helpful.

There are trains that travel from Nice to Rome which stopover in Pisa. Check out the trenitalia (italian rail) or scnf (french rail) websites.
I paid about 200 Euros for a 1st class double sleeper cabin on a night train from Pisa to Nice, last September. Booked it through the trenitalia website without any problems. You will probably find cheaper if you are happy with just a seat each. However, since you are boarding in Nice it may be easier to purchase through scnf.

I would say the best way is to rent a car for convenience %26amp; speed. Otherwise take the train via Genova %26amp; Pisa - somewhat slow but not expensive. Don%26#39;t go to Milan! You have to go via Genova to go there and back. It%26#39;s a business city of limited tourist interest and an enormous detour. See the trenitalia website. By road it%26#39;s 4-5 hours, by rail about 6 at a guess.

Did you ever figure out the best way to get from Nice to Lucca. I am to be in Nice next week and have four free days. I wish to get to Lucca for a couple of days. My grandfather came to US from Lucca in 1915 - so it%26#39;s been a great dream. Any feedback would be great.

Where is Lucca in Italy (close to what big town)? That could help to give you some advice
|||
Lucca is around 20 km northeastern of Pisa.

I have researched that journey as we are doing a similar trip next year. You don%26#39;t have to go via Milan although I disagree with a previous poster about Milan%26#39;s attractions.The Last Supper, The Duomo, La Scala, great restaurants,the BEST shopping in Europe and the proximity to Lake Como make Milan an excellent place to visit .
However back to your post. You can travel by train to Lucca via Pisa (check Trenitalia for details) and It takes about 9 hours.
The train for you will be by far the cheapest option because renting a car in France and dropping off in Italy involves a surcharge, although a car does give you so much more freedom and if you have the time it is certainly worth it. The roads all the way are fantastic.

I know it is a lot of trouble to rent a car in France and then bring it to Italy. But the Italian border is quite close to Nice and you probably could rent a rent a car in a town like Sanremo, maybe Vintimille.

Thanks so much for the replies! It sounds like train from Nice (or Antibes) to Genova (overnight) and then to Lucca. I didn%26#39;t realise that a stop over in Milan would add on so much time and as much as we would like to see Milan this time I think our 2 children will not deal with much sightseeing after a train trip.
