I am visiting Montpellier during first part of october (2005), and want to make a reprotage about Carcasonne - including the cit, the catars and winetasting. I have my husband (french) and to children accompangning me. Do you have any suggestions? Extraordinary things, vineyards ore cites we absolutely must see, or places that are nice to stay? Any experiences or tips are of interest! We have only to days, travelling from Montpellier by car.

If you speak French, this is a fantastic site about the history of the Cathars
http://portail.cathares.org/
I%26#39; a bit pressed for time right now but have studied the Cathars extensively and know the region very well, so I%26#39;ll post something more comrehensive in the next wek or two so keep an eye out for that.
Carcassonne and the Cite is an absolute must-see, my wife and I spent two days at the Hotel de la Cite in July and it was sheer heaven.
You should also look at this site (though I can%26#39;t seem to access it at the moment), it%26#39;s by Kate Mosse, an English writer and broadcaster who has just published a novel about the Cathars and who lives part of the time in Carcassonne:

We stayed in two nights in June at a lovely B%26amp;B (Le Traoupet Chambres d’Hotes) minutes from Carcassone in a rural area. Big garden, sparkling pool and a choice of attractive rooms. You don%26#39;t say what age your children are but the spacious Lavender and Blue rooms we used may be suitable - joined by a big bathroom. Check their web site out - rates, photos etc.
We thought the museum at Narbonne was excellent.
Have a great trip.

Definitley see carcassonne! LaGrasse also is a really nice place to see to the east of Carcassonne. A lovely 12th Century Village. Lots of places to stop for apicnic on the way. Also worth seeing is the Grotte Du Limousis and the Grotee du Cabrespine! Absolutley unbelievable crystal formations presented to lights and music, sounds cheesey but it%26#39;s really really good.
Enjoy!

Writingtraveller, greetings. I was thinking of doing one of those canal boat trips that passes by Carcasonne with some day trips by bicycle around the area. Any other thoughts about things to see in this area. Thanks

Not sure of anywhere right nearby esp. within biking distance. However if you are cycling you%26#39;ll probably be hungry! (Just got to work this in), the absolute best restaurant in Carcassonne!) The owners of the Villa we normally stay in in Palaja say that the restaurants in Le Cite are naff, which is true, you are captive in La Cite and they do tend to just serve below par food at exorbitant prices because people want to eat in the squares etc. However L%26#39;Ecurie in the new town (i.e. not 1000 years old!) is absolutley great. Not the cheapest but not a rip off (work on £65-70 for two with a cheaper bottle of wine and appertifs.) Very good french food in what used to be stables which are prteserved, very classy place. You can even eat outside in the little private square if you like. PS If you like your duck medium rare you get it raw flash pan fried and dripping so specify if you don%26#39;t like that. Here are the menus:
BUDGET PAR PERSONNE 15-30€ / Menu 15€ midi, 21€ et 23€
